Abstract:Most employees are in jobs that will last some ten to twenty years. Short tenure jobs are concentrated amongst certain types of workers, for example the young, to an extent that most employment experience is spent in long jobs. This longer time horizon opens up a range of contractual arrangements that can be usefully interpreted in terms of the personnel function of the enterprise. The contractual arrangements attempt to secure for the employing enterprise the most effective use of its employees, the cost of monitoring employee performance and compensation.
