Abstract:The major obstacle that a blood bank administrator faces in controlling crossmatched blood inventory is in the prior determination of shortages and outdates. A model for computing shortages and outdates is derived: crossmatch demand is stochastic. This provides the blood bank administrator a method of determining desired free inventory levels. Effective control of shortages and outdates provides better service to patients and results in reduced costs. The model has limitations. Relaxation of these limitations can lead to topics for future research.
