Abstract:One of the most important factors determining the success or failure of entrepreneurs is the way they handle ownership power. An examination is made of the dark side of ownership power from the perspective of accountants and lawyers with experience of privately owned businesses. Case histories reveal that abuse of ownership power can lead to business failure. Highly centralized authority with mainly top down communication is a common sign of power abuse. Others include the situation where entrepreneurs distrust the competence of their employees and tend to withhold information from them. Three steps are required to regulate the management of power and improve company performance.
