| Abstract: | Information contained in the 1984 Workplace Industrial Relations Survey /WIRS/ is used to investigate the actual impact of unions on investment. First, the alternative channels are reviewed through which unions might affect investment. It is followed by a simple theoretical model of investment which embodies all the alternative channels. Next, data and results are presented and interpreted. Finally, conclusions from results are drawn. The main conclusion is that unionism has no significant effect on investment or the introduction of new technology. However , unions may well hurt investment in periods when they are stronger. It is also noted that, in terms of raw correlations, unionism is positively associated with investment. |
