Abstract:The widespread application of computers in manufacturing has brought vast change to the organisation, methods and control of manufacturing. As a result the cost advantage of mass production diminishes. The article tries to find out whether at the 3-digit level of aggregation of data for US engineering industries does flexibility help in explaining international trade flows and which model is better suited to explain the observed trade flows - an extended factor-proportions model or an intra-industry trade model.
