Abstract:Ever since the original Arab oil embargo Americans have thought of the Persian Gulf as the West's lifeline. But the importance of Middle Eastern oil has been overstated. Both the USA and the USSR produce more oil than Saudi Arabia. The Persian Gulf does account for a larger share of reserves - one-half by some accounts - but those figures are funny numbers. Its dominance over reserves will come into play only gradually, giving the West time to adjust. Oil decontrol brought forth more energy at lower price. The nine largest USA oil companies as listed in the Fortune 500 spilled 6,922,928 gallons of oil in the years 1984 to 1988. Some policy issues on handling oil resources in the USA are outlined.
