Abstract: | The effects of unions on the degree of organisational change (that is changes in work practices) and employment are examined, using data drawn from the 1984 Workplace Industrial Relations Survey (Great Britain). Evidence on various possible factors are presented and discussed that might lead to organisational change in product and financial market conditions, in addition to union effects. It is followed by the attempt to ascertain whether the statistical association that is observed between unionism and employment decline during 1980-84 can be explained by the removal of restrictive practices, and may be thought of as a once-for-all effect. Some new evidence is also reported on relation of employment and unionism. |
