Abstract:The operative notion in Just-In-Time (JIT) manufacturing, to wring out all slack in the manufacture of goods, can be applied to management planning functions as well, with results on the same order of magnitude. A model is developed to explain why and how a company can benefit from reduced management delays. System dynamics and simulations are used to show the advantages of shortening the planning horizon in the product life cycle analysis. Management responsibility for three delays is examined: the gap between gathering forecasting data and generating the forecast; the time it takes to develop a sales and operation plan; the time it takes to issue buy and build plans. A numerical case example is presented.
