Abstract:Thai banks are preparing for increased competition. Old and new, east and west, combine in an intoxicating mixture in Bangkok. While exhaust fumes and pollution from the capital's congested traffic, thriving businesses and and street markets testify to the country's heady rate of growth, a visitor can escape to the calm splendor of the Grand Palace in the west of the city. Back in the frenetic business areas of the city, Thailand's banks, with a similar calm, are facing up to the reality of more domestic and foreign banks being licensed in 1996 and further liberalization. But they are not complacent.
