Abstract: | Asian countries are drawing in unprecedented numbers of migrant workers to feed industrial growth. But by leaving them in legal limbo, governments may be asking for trouble. It was a simple calculation, and the choice seemed obvious. But it has left Muhamad Zaki flat broke and 2,000 kilometers from home in the dreary Sumatran port of Dumai, a year of his life wasted. Zaki, 26, comes from Lombok, the Indonesian island east of Bali, where he earned 85 cents a day as a motorcycle driver. When a friend told him he could earn 10 times as much in Malaysia, Zaki jumped at the chance. |
