Abstract: | As Thailand's economy stalls, many lenders are looking vulnerable. Chatri Sophonopanich has heard the gloomy talk before - and discounted it. This time, however, the Bangkok Bank executive chairman concedes that the situation is more serious than some of his peers will admit. The problem? In short, the days of easy money are over for Thai banks. With the economy such in a trough, the kingdom's 15 full-service lenders can no longer count on the 30%-plus return on equity that once made Bangkok Bank the most profitable financial institution in Southeast Asia. |
