Abstract:Can Thailand's central bank handle the baht crisis? Like lots of people, the first thing Siri Ganjarerdee does each weekday morning is check his computer screen. For Siri, though, it is a crucial vigil. As assistant governor of the Bank of Thailand, he must keep a close eye on exchange rates, numbers which mark the shifting front line in the bank's long-running battle against currency speculators out to sink the baht. A lot rides on the outcome of this battle. So far, the central bank has managed to defend the baht.
