Abstract: | The article discusses how post-socialist transition to market economy change gender wage inequality and what processes are driving the change. The data is on full-time workers in the former Soviet Union. It appears that in Estonia and Latvia during 4-5 years in the 1990s men were more likely to move up the wage hierarchy. The opposite development took place in regions in Russia and Ukraine. The wage mobility of gender-segregated occupations was a major factor to the changes in gender wage stratification. However, effect of family factors on the earnings of men and women does not explain the gender wage mobility. |
