Abstract:In many Western countries, incl. Switzerland, self-employment (hereafter as: s-e.) has recently risen. This paper explores how the overall climate for setting up a business, individual job opportunities, and structural characteristics of labour market positions affect transitions to s-e. in the occupationally segmented Swiss labour market.
Using two data sets, event history models are run. The Swiss Life History Study provides information on transitions into s-e. With the Swiss Job Monitor, indicators are built of the time-variant aggregate level and individual (herein as: ind.) level opportunities and incentives for setting up a business. Based on results, it is indicated that moves into s-e. are affected both by macroeconomic conditions, ind. job opportunities, and structural characteristics of the labour market position, with pull factors dominating at the macro level and the interplay of push and pull factors at the ind. level.
