Abstract:In the ten years following the 1973 oil crisis Japan achieved more significant economies in energy-usage per unit of gross domestic product than did Britain and the gap is widening. The two main range of factors that may have contributed to the difference: (1) the much greater participation of employees at all levels in a firm in discussing the strategy and tactics of energy conservation and in the subsequent decision-making; (2) the insistence by Japanese managements on careful planning of the introduction of energy-saving techniques.
