Abstract:Practical-minded managers know that temporary workers can help them through crunch periods without the need to hire, and through downsizing without the need to fire. The temporary help industry has become a permanent part of the American business scene. The history of the phenomenon is briefly reviewed since the period of World War II, when temporary companies indexed their workers skills and availability and assigned them to routine work in emergency. Entering the 1990s, the temporary workforce has again expanded and now includes blue-collar workers in warehouses, factories and construction trades; white-collar workers including nurses, laboratory technicians and computer programmers, and professional employees of other specialities. The benefits are assessed.
