Abstract:There is an ever increasing demand for highly flexible and geographically mobile professional and managerial staff in many companies throughout the United Kingdom. This means that the effective management of career development, succession planning, job mobility and relocation will be among the major challenges facing industrial and commercial organizations in the 1990s. The examples of two large UK companies are used to show the way according to job mobility and relocation can be successfully (or unsuccessfully) managed. Characteristics and outcomes of job changes are described and analyzed. The implications for personnel managers are discussed. The future goals of the research project are briefly outlined.
