Abstract:In the 1960s, the promotion of political engagement and the education of citizens to become politically mature were basic concerns of educational (herein as: educ-al.) reforms. This study explores whether educ-al. expansion has had an impact on citizens' political interest since 1960s. The effects of age, education, period, and cohort on political interest are simultaneously analyzed. By comparing these effects in Switzerland and in West Germany, a cross-cultural perspective is included. Based on cumulated data sets (ALLBUS, UNIVOX), there is found a robust effect of education: the more educated are also more politically interested. As often suggested, the younger generation is not more distant from politics. Taking into account their higher educ-al. level, these younger cohorts show the same level of political interest with the older cohorts at the same age.
