Abstract:ESOP (Employee Stock Ownership Plans) has grown tremendously in the 1980s, but not without problems. The USA National ESOP Association gave ESOP communications program at Austin Industries the 1988 excellence in communications award. This ESOP program is analyzed. The consequence is drawn, that managers of the most effective ESOPs, judging from the perspective of improved employee performance, have avoided a variety of pitfalls. The successful ESOPs were doing the following: Distributing risks and rewards fairly; planning for the repurchase of stock; refraining from putting all the eggs in one basket; keeping employees informed, and finally, educating employees.
