Abstract:Over 8,000 business in the US with over 8 million employees now have ESOPs (employee stock ownership plans) or similar other plans. Almost all ESOP companies are successful when they set up their plans, and most become even more successful afterwards. In a study of ESOP companies over a ten year period it was found that they have grown 40 to 46 percent faster than could have been expected otherwise. Motivational background of ESOP plants is sketched. Motivating employees is not enough, however. It is essential to provide participation opportunities, share information extensively, give right to make decisions, train people to their highest level of capacity. In general unions have been cool to ESOPs.
