| Abstract: | This paper presents new evidence on the influence of income inequality (henceforth as: inc-eq.) on generalized trust. Based on individual panel data from Swedish counties and an instrumental variable strategy, it is found that differences in disposable income, and especially differences among people in the bottom half of the income distribution, are associated with lower trust. The relationship btw. inc-eq. and trust is especially strong for people with a strong aversion against income differentials. |
