Abstract:Largely due to recent increases in immigration to the USA, there has been a noticeable wave of English-only regulations in the workplace lately. Some are very strict /only English may be spoken at any time on company premises/, others are fairly loose, and many of these rules are merely understandings; but they are likely to be illegal. A recent court ruling established the principle that the use of foreign languages in the workplace may be restricted only when there is a compelling business-related necessity to do so. Several legal cases are discussed in this matter. It is concluded that discussion and training may alleviate language tensions in the USA business.
