| Abstract: | Beside the general effects of the worldwide recession the special problems of the German economy are described. It is argued that in addition to the cyclical and external problems several structural problems worsen the competitive position of the German automobile industry. Some of these are associated with Germany as a location for industrial production. The approaches applied so far to solve the high costs and low productivity problems are by far not statisfactory. It is argued that there is a huge productivity potential in the country, and that by exploiting it the costs and productivity gap could be closed. Internationalization, global sourcing, supplier relations and flexibility are investigated in this context. |
