Abstract:Fixing GM has turned into a decade long project that few people, investors, analysts, company executives, could have foreseen. The big problem is that GM has lost the home-field advantage. It makes almost no money in North America, where it has higher costs than its competitors and some of the weakest brands. Last year a strong performance by the rest of GM was dragged down by North Amercian Operations (NAO). U.S. market share declined for the fifth straight year. Despite the debacle GM expects major improvements at NAO in 1997. Outside GM expectations are lower.
