| Abstract: | The article's interest is to bring out specific peculiarities of system suppliers in the automotive industry in full relief. Competitive advantages of system suppliers are discussed and deducted by the resource based theory. Differences between system suppliers and others are explained by specific capabilities. These are consequences of the bundles of resources. The results are gained from two empirical inquiries. The first one was started in 1990 before the integration of the supplier system has taken place, the second after starting in 1995. Cluster analysis showed three main factors: production and transaction efficiency, asset specifity and innovation by cooperation. The empirical data support the resource based theory. The capabilities are idiosyncratic and differ the firms over the observed period. |
