Abstract:The paper examines decision-making (here as: d-m.) rationale when making trade-offs (as: t-off/t-offs) in design. A case study of a mass-market car manufacturer was performed using interviews, qualitative questionnaires and observation. It is found that d-m. practices in t-off situations depend on the way that decision makers perceive the relative importance of design targets and t-off criteria. A conceptual framework (here as: f-w.) is presented to explain the rationale of t-offs in different design contexts. Using two real life examples, it is described how to apply this f-w. to understand design t-offs.
