Abstract:It is important for both theories of work motivation and for theories of personal well-being to know employees' preferences about the types of jobs they want. This article compares the relative strength of intrinsic and extrinsic preferences in these countries. It also seeks to examine the usefulness of contrasting theoretical accounts for employees' job preference orientation. It uses representative data for five European countries with contrasting institutional regimes. (Denmark, Finland, Germany, Great-Britain and Sweden)
