Abstract:The pace of mergers and acquisitions among U.S. commercial banks has increased dramatically over the past several years. From an annual average of 170 mergers during the 1960 to 1989 period, the annual average increased to about 498 during the 1980 to 1989 period. Of the many factors leading to this increase in merger activity, the weakening of regulatory restrictions against interstate banking was a significant contributing factor.
