Abstract:This paper explores the determinants of entry into Italian local banking markets from 1991 to 2002. A simple model is built in which the probability of branching in a new market depends on the features of the local market and the potential entrant. Banks are shown to be more likely to expand into those markets closest to their pre-entry locations. Large banks can also better cope with distance-related entry costs than small banks. Finally, banks have got increasingly able to open branches in distant markets because of the implementation of information and communication technologies (ICT).
