Abstract:This article develops a model explaining differences in the division of labour (here as: div-of-lab.) across firms as a result of computer technology adoption. Changes in the div-of-lab. result from reduced production time and improved communication possibilities (here as: comm-poss). The first shifts the div-of-lab. towards generic structures, while the latter enhances specialization. This study's estimates for a sample of Dutch establishments from 1990 to 1996 suggest productivity gains (as: prod-gns.) to be the main determinant for shifts in the div-of-lab. These prod-gns. induced skill upgrading, while in firms gaining from improved comm-poss. specialization increased and skill requirements have fallen.
