Abstract:The purpose of this paper is to present a model to address the sources and timing of technological change and dominant designs by using music industry as an example. The article demonstrates the impact of lower-level product design hierarchy improvements on design tradeoffs. Design tradeoffs affect movement both up and down the design hierarchy: movement upwards creates new product classes, whereas movement downwards may cause a dominant design to emerge in a given product class.
