Abstract:It is argued that incumbent firms have several reasons to proactively invent early in cycles of technological change. herein, the focus is on the strategies allowing incumbents to be successful in the endeavour during the infancy of an emerging field, the period before it is clear how the field will affect dominant designs. The evidence counters the stereotypical view of incumbent firms playing a passive role in major technological changes by abiding by incremental inventions in the existing dominant designs. There are found significant inventions by incumbents outside the existing dominant designs, the success of which is related to their willingness of searching new areas, of exploring scientific knowledge in the public domain, and of forming alliances with a balanced partner portfolio. Using data from the global semiconductor industry from 1989 to 2002, there is found support for the study's hypotheses.
