Abstract:This article examines the feasibility and desirability of corporate social responsibility (CSR) by identifying CSR with creation of public goods or curtailment of public bads. The authors use a model with profitmaximizing firms to demonstrate that a direct parallel between CSR and traditional models of private provisions of public goods exists. Companies using CSR produce public goods the same amount as predicted by the standard voluntary contribution equilibrium. A comparision between CSR and governement provision and charitable provision is provided with an analysis about when CSR by private for-profit companies could obtain a comparative advantage in dealing with public goods provision.
