Abstract:Based on reviewing the economic literature, this study offers an analysis of the primary causes of breaches of corporate responsibility standards. Using a small survey of the board corporate social responsibility (CSR) activities of 20 of Britain's (U.K.) largest companies, it is assessed whether boards are addressing these causes effectively. It is concluded that board activity might usefully be reoriented for doing more to address the fundamental incentives problems often causing CSR failures, that is, market failure and misaligned performance management systems.
