Abstract:Quality is the latest buzzword in the diary of American industry, even though it has been around less conspicuously since the industrial revolution. Yet real questions remain about whether America can close the gap and regain markets in a number of industries that have fallen on hard times, or maintain leadership in other industries now being threatened. Why has progress been so slow? The authors believe there are two main reasons: (1) the failure to understand fully what quality is and how it can affect business; and (2) the attempt to "solve" the quality problem by way of prescriptions.
