| Abstract: | The analysis of the investment activities of firms in the former GDR between 1970 and 1986 reveals compara- tively smaller structural changes in reaction to external influences than that of firms in the FRG. The system of the planned economy was able to protect firms from external shocks. Unfortunately, it also prevented investment and innovation activities in response to these shocks. An analy- sis of structural changes in investment with the AIC- criterion shows that investment in the GDR-firms was highly cyclical.
