Abstract: | The report presents issues of travel and tourism of Antarctica. The area is the world's least visited continent. Regular commercial cruises began in 1966. During the 1997-98 season (from mid-November to early March) a record of 9,378 cruise passengers visited the region. That is up 28 % on the previous year's level. Because of its relatively easy accessibility from South American ports, the Antarctic peninsula is the most visited part of the continent. A small number of tourists also reach the interiour by air, and an even smaller number arrive by charter yacht. Overflights have proved to be a successful component of the Antarctic tourism product range. |
