Abstract:This paper considers the growth of Norwegian tanker shipping in the period 1919-1939 when the world’s shipping industry was in crisis. Quantitative analysis is based on a new database of all Norwegian tankers and tanker owners in the interwar period. The empirical evidence disproves traditional views of the importance of the second-hand tankers from Anglo-Saxon Petroleum Co. The analysis also reveals that Oslo-based shipowners and Swedish yards played more important role than Anglo-Saxon vessels.
