Abstract: | Some initial explorations of the determinants of the intensity of supervision are discussed. The intensity of supervision is defined, and summary data are presented on trends and variations. Some skeletal analytic expectations about the determinants of supervisory intensity are derived next, highlighting conflicting expectations between efficiency-wage and labour-discipline models. It is followed by a brief report of results on some econometric tests of those analytical expectations for the United States both across manufacturing industries and over time for the private nonagriculture economy. Finally, comments on implications for further research are presented. |
