Abstract:The leadership lessons gleaned through Lieutenant General William G. Pagonis's experience in the Gulf War apply equally to general management and leadership development in the private, civilian sector. Analyzing his experience of leadership, the author argues that a true leader must demonstrate two active, essential and interrelated traits: expertise and empathy. Leadership almost always involves cooperation and collaboration. Organizational development includes a delicate balance of effective delegation and system-building. It is vital to give and get feed-back.
