| Abstract: | In order to avoid the dismissal of a considerable part of the labour force, a decisive agreement has been signed at Volkswagen, the big German automobile manufacturer, relating to the reduction of working hours. The German electric and metal processing industries accept this solution too. The question of whether can this measure really solve generally the problem of unemployment is investigated. It is argued that the recent reduction of working hours can only prevent further dismissal, and the framework in which economic growth and a higher level of employment would be possible could be created by a coordinated financial and monetary politicy. |
