Abstract:It is hard to think of a time when the employment relationship has been as central to the concerns of social scientists as it is at present. From students of organizational behaviour to economists, there is an unprecedented awareness that the naturing and motivation of employees' abilities is fundamental to successful performance. It is the argument of this paper that the partial eclipse of industrial relations by other disciplinary approaches has arisen from an unthinking neglect of the most potent tradition of the subject, especially with regard to research into workplace bargaining.
