Abstract:Perhaps the biggest story in European industrial relations this month is the conclusion of a draft agreement on parental leave between the EU-level social partners, which is reported in the News section. This pioneering deal would provide, among other items, a right for all employees to take time off on grounds of force majeure for urgent family reasons in cases of sickness or accident making the immediate presence of the worker indispensable." The authors' survey of 19 countries examines the current diverse provisions for such family leave in the EU and elsewhere in western Europe.
