Abstract:As academics and researchers document and, in some cases lament, the decline of unionism across the Atlantic and in Europe, they have increasingly turned to the questions of what comes next in terms of employee organization in the workplace of the turn of the century. In addressing the now extensive debate about the role of workplace institutions , the author suggests as an underlying theme that the subject of such institutions and the whole question of workplace governance should be re-examined to avoid the collectivist-individualist dichotomy.
