Abstract:Western companies are coming under pressure to require their third-world suppliers to observe minimum employment standards. David Littlefield describes the risks if they don't - and explores the practical dilemmas facing some of the main industries involved. It is not known exactly how many children are employed as full-time workers around the world, although the number certainly runs into hundreds of millions. Nor is it clear how many people in developing countries are denied a living wage. The question is: what can western employers do about it?
