Abstract:Many have global aspirations but few have been able to succeed, and going into the next century even fewer will genuinely be able to claim the mantle of the "global bank". While globalisation has been a key theme of the 1990s and many institutions have made enormous efforts to spread their networks and operations worldwide, the strains caused by the high cost of technology, attracting suitable expertise and satisfying the increasing demands of shareholders have caused many to rethink their strategies.
