Abstract:To date, academic studies of the call center "sector" remain limited in scope. In this article, the authors attempt to remedy that omission by analyzing the recent and spectacular growth of call centers in the UK, drawing on a wide variety of sources, including two extensive surveys of developments in Scotland during 1997. No sector of British industry has attracted more publicity in recent months than "call center" operations.
