Abstract:It's hardly the best way to promote the success of a merger. In the year since Corus was created out of the coming together of British Steel and its Dutch counterpart, Koninklijke Hoogovens, the news has been almost uniformly dismal. Not only has the company announced the loss of thousands of jobs as part of its plan to produce cost savings of up to 300 million GBP, but it has also seen its financial position weakened as a result of the strength of sterling against the euro, uncertain demand for steel, production difficulties and costs associated with the merger and the resultant restructuring.
