Abstract: | Today, a lot of employees use their spare time on volunteer work (hereafter as; vol-work.) , e.g. in board positions or athletic clubs. Surveys in Scandinavia show that approximately 50 percent of the population use spare time on vol-work. In Norway, this vol-work. is shown to constitute 156.900 unpaid man-labour years. This study aims at examining a hypothesized relationship between participation (as: parts.) in vol-work. and development (as: devlp.) of 4 general (as: gen.) competencies (as: comps.) in social adaptability, conflict management, flexibility, and creativity. It also aims at assessing the potential influence of vol-work. on job performance. A field study is used to examine a path model with 8 implicit hypotheses. The results reveal that parts. in vol-work. is associated with devlp. of the 4 gen. comps. It is also shown that comps. in conflict management and flexibility are associated with employees' job performance in their paid work employment (original in Norwegian). |
