Abstract:This study provides an overall characterization of the main human resources management (HRM) practices used in Portugal (herein as: P.), comparing them with the benchmark models proposed in the literature. In the analysis, five criteria are used: 1. How do the main HRM practices fit the existing management models, 2. How does the HRM conform to a work organization of the matricial type, 3. To identify whether the role of HRM is essentially administrative or strategic, 4. To identify where the responsibility for HRM lies within the firms operating in P., 5. To characterize the relation btw. HRM and work organisation in P. Based on a representative sample of firms operating in P., identified are three clusters to characterize and analyze the stylised HRM practices implemented in P., that is, network-based, familiar-based or bureaucratized. There are shown contrasting management patterns, which can be interpreted as different stages of evolution as to HRM practices in Portugal.
